What is a Health Related Fitness Component?

The health related fitness components are cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. They are important to include in your workouts to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Cardiovascular (or cardio) fitness is the ability to perform exercise at moderate-to-vigorous intensity for a long period of time. This includes activities such as walking, swimming, jogging, and cycling.

Cardiovascular Endurance

Whether you’re climbing a flight of stairs or training for your next martial arts tournament, having good cardiovascular endurance is a crucial part of fitness. Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of your heart, lungs and blood vessels to work together during whole-body physical activities.

Your cardiovascular endurance is influenced by how often and how hard you exercise, as well as the type of exercises you perform. Aerobic exercises, such as running, swimming, cycling and dancing, increase cardiovascular endurance because they cause your body to demand more oxygen.

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is also an excellent way to increase your cardiovascular endurance because it involves short periods of intense activity followed by recovery periods. Endurance exercises are the ones that target slow-twitch muscle fibers, like bench presses or bicep curls with dumbbells. They train your muscles to use oxygen better, which allows you to go longer before fatigue sets in.

If you’re looking to improve your muscular endurance, consider including high-rep exercises that challenge your muscles and joints in their full range of motion in your workouts (think: plank) or using circuit training with a mix of resistance and cardio. This is a great way to build both strength and endurance at the same time.

Flexibility

Flexibility is the ability of muscles, joints, and soft tissue to move through a pain-free range of motion. The stretches and bends used for flexibility exercises help keep the joints and muscles in proper alignment, prevent muscle imbalance, promote healthy movement patterns, and decrease injury risk.

Athletes who compete in gymnastics, hurdles, or dance require good flexibility, but flexibility is important for everyone. It makes everyday movements, such as walking and climbing stairs, easier and more comfortable.

Flexibility is typically measured using a series of positions, such as the sit and reach test where people lean forward to touch their toes. Unlike cardiorespiratory endurance and body composition, relationships between flexibility tests and health outcomes or markers have not been well established. This is partly because flexibility tests are highly specific to the joints involved and, therefore, are less likely to have general systemic effects. Moreover, the relationships with health outcomes thought to be related to flexibility (e.g., back pain, injury prevention, posture problems) may be due to complex interactions among multiple musculoskeletal factors.

Body Composition

A balance of muscle mass and fat is important for mobility, posture, strength and a strong immune system for long term health. Body composition is a morphological component of health-related fitness and has been included in laboratory and field tests for many years.

Muscular strength is the ability of a muscle to exert force against resistance, which can be imposed by weights or natural gravity, and it is developed through resistance training. A strong muscular structure can help prevent injury and improve posture, balance and flexibility.

Speed or quickness is the ability to move the body parts in a very short time, usually tested with running related tests such as the 40 yard dash. Balance and coordination is the ability to control the movements of various body segments with efficiency and dexterity. Flexibility is the ability to extend muscles to different positions, allowing movement with ease and precision. Skill-related fitness consists of agility, power and reaction time.
